At the beginning of the year my prayer partner and I agreed to hold each other accountable for commitments we made to ourselves. You know. Added assurance that we will actually do what we set out to do. This is going to sound trivial because it should be so easy, but so far I forget to write out my plan for the next day before the next day comes around. Well amazingly, I remembered last night and guess what I woke up thinking this morning. Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” How does that happen? Just when I need a word from the Lord, there it is. Since making promises to me doesn’t work, I need that light to my path. God, more than anyone else, walks ahead to lead me, walks beside to encourage me, and walks behind to push me onward. Have you ever felt surrounded by so much to do, or so many options you didn’t know what to do first, so you just did nothing? Or like me, start one thing … then another thing … then move on to something else … and lose track of what I should have been doing moment to moment. Somewhere the psalmist says something about our plans? Oh look! Here it is in Psalm 20:4 “May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.” Perfect!
Last night as I was looking around and feverishly writing down everything I could think of that I promised to do, this was running through my mind. “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:3 Do you think that ran through my head for no purpose? Yeh, me either. It ran through my head to let me know that God is beside me as the encourager and choreographer of my steps. I don’t need all the answers right now because it will all work out – “the Lord establishes their steps”.
Just so you know – this doesn’t mean I can ask God to wave a wand and sprinkle my path with pixie dust while I sit back and do nothing. I’m fully aware that the enemy of my soul is preparing to set up barriers to progress. He knows my vulnerabilities and my distractions. He would like nothing better than to provide distractions, insert doubts, and send me to the pit of defeat. So I’m armoring up! Ephesians 6:10-11 “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Huh! The devil has schemes and it’s to take over my plan! I have a strategy for that, and it can be your strategy too. Proverbs 16:3 says “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” That sounds good, but that’s just a start. Over in the New Testament, Paul says pray because “God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us —- Ephesians 3:20 ”

Last week the music minister at my church recommended that we read the book of Habakkuk and I’m not kidding, here’s one of the verse that seems perfect for today. Habakkuk 3:19 “The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.” I’m putting on those deer feet, off and running with a plan and prayer.
